We Might See More Handhelds Soon, Tom Henderson Says

It's always good to have more options.

Handhelds may not have as little variety as consoles, but for a long time, Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck were the only popular options.

This, however, might change soon, as Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson says more new handhelds and improvements are coming.

"Almost everyone at Gamescom gave interesting hardware discussions about handhelds. My hunch is that you should save your money a little longer if you're planning to buy one. It seems like a lot more options and improvements are coming soon."

He doesn't know when exactly it will happen, but the promise of choice is sweet. One such device might come from PlayStation. Henderson said that after PlayStation Portal's success, the company is "paying very close attention to the current handheld market." PS Portal is reportedly the best-selling gaming accessory in the UK and the US, but it can't be called a true standalone handheld because it only works with PS5, so a more convenient version would be nice.

Other than that, you can already buy ASUS ROG Ally, which was announced last year, especially since SteamOS will support the console. Of course, there is also Switch 2, expected in 2025.

I'm sure a lot of people would love to get Steam Deck 2, but I doubt it will happen any time soon. What handheld would you like to see?
