This tool allows for merging complex geometry if merging by distance is problematic or if you need to preserve UVs and want to avoid bridging faces. Also, it is a perfect solution if you need to merge seams together on clothing.
Merging by distance might result in merging many unwanted components, and an attempt to bridge faces and remove the unwanted edges might destroy your UVs. It is an issue in clothing workflows as you need to blend from the UV mesh to the 3D mesh a lot.
The add-on allows you to simply merge a minimum of three vertices between your mesh islands, select the start vertex, and run the ZipMerge operator under the merge menu. After, you can set the desired iterations. The new 1.2 version of the add-on can stop merging when a corner is detected:
