Artist Showcases a Realistic Water Shader Running in VR on Meta Quest 3

Shahzod Boyhonov's new shader is powered by Unity URP.

Technical Artist and Developer Shahzod "Specoolar" Boyhonov, whom many of you likely know as the creator of Cell Fluids, a Geometry Nodes-powered fluid simulation add-on for Blender, continues experimenting with digital water, this time visiting the realm of virtual reality.

In his latest demo, the developer showcased an impressive water shader with highly-realistic waterline and underwater effects, running in VR on the Meta Quest 3 headset at 72 FPS. The new shader was set up in Unity Universal Render Pipeline (URP) without post-processing, and its "waterline and underwater fogs are just two quads in front of the camera with special shaders".

Previously Shahzod also showcased a Unity-powered take on Half-Life: Alyx's famous liquid-in-a-bottle effect, a cool-looking 2.5D fluid simulation, a Blender-powered grass simulation, a swarm of bugs simulation created with Blender's Simulation Nodes, a Unity-made mobile Rain Simulator app prototype, a Light Trails Generator for Blender, and more. You can check out all of these projects by visiting the creator's Twitter page.
