Aztec Mythology-Focused Horror Death Relives Uses Death Whistle in Sound Design

It produces a chilling scream.

Creating horrifying noises for a horror video game can be challenging, and Nyctophile Studios has chosen a creative way of toying with players' nerves by introducing a death whistle to its work on Death Relives.

The company says that the scream produced by the device is considered one of the most terrifying sounds. Nyctophile Studios obtained a replica of the skull-shaped Aztec whistle and incorporated it into its sound design to voice some enemies, trying to make encounters with them more intense.

While the studio and some historians say such whistles were used to demoralize enemies, music archeologist Arnd Adje Both believes they were ritual instruments based on the fact the first was found in a temple and no Aztec warriors have been found wearing one. Interestingly, the original whistles recovered from the temple site in Mexico City are smaller than what we're used to seeing in media and produce a much gentler sound that resembles the wind.

Death Relives, with its death whistle elements, mixes horror FPS and stealth mechanics with Aztec mythology. You need to escape the Aztec god Xipe Totec and rescue your mother while solving puzzles and avoiding dangerous traps.

The game should be released in Q4 2024, so wishlist it on Steam and join our 80 Level Talent platform and our Telegram channel, follow us on InstagramTwitterLinkedInTikTok, and Reddit, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
