CG Artist Shows a Quick & Easy Way to Grow a Beard

YouTuber CGMatter elongated his beard using 3D magic.

Have you always dreamed of a thick, gorgeous beard but found yourself on the losing end of the genetic lottery, stuck with a patchy goatee or a thin mustache? If so, fear not, because there's now a simple way to finally achieve the facial hair of your dreams in 3D, as showcased recently by CGMatter.

A brilliant CG Artist and popular YouTube, CGMatter has recently extended his own facial hair using the power of 3D software, capturing and unwrapping his face in real-time and attaching an Amish-style CG beard to it, resulting in an impressively realistic look that could easily fool even the most eagle-eyed viewer. Although the author didn't explicitly confirm it, it's highly likely that this digital beard surgery was accomplished using Blender, the creator's go-to application, and KeenTools' FaceTracker plug-in, which CGMatter has been experimenting with recently.

If this neat experiment piqued your interest and you'd like to see more from the artist, we highly recommend visiting CGMatter's YouTube channel, filled to the brim with comprehensive tutorials on computer graphics, Blender, proceduralism, simulations, add-on creation, and more.

You can also visit KeenTools' official website to learn more about their FaceTracker tools for Blender and Nuke.

And if you'd like to learn how hair and beards are made for AAA games, you can check out our interview with 3D Artist Aleksandr Sosa, who back in 2021 shared an in-depth breakdown of his Hairstyle and Beard for Games project, showed the optimal width for hair, and explained how to make a universal set of textures for Marmoset Toolbag, Unreal Engine, and Unity.
