Meta's AI Generates UVs Using Blender's Tool

3DGen is not as omnipotent as it might seem.

Meta

Meta has recently presented its 3DGen AI system that generates 3D assets from text prompts in under a minute. As the company claims, it can produce high-resolution textures and material maps end-to-end 3 to 10 times faster than other solutions. Aside from this, it revealed the system's parts – Meta 3D TextureGen for texture generation and 3D AssetGen for the creation of meshes.

It sounds powerful, but it turns out even AI can't do everything without help from artist-favorite free software, Blender. Character artist Liz Edwards decided to investigate these tools and found out that to make UVs, TextureGen uses Blender's Smart Project.

"For objects that do not have a suitable UV map, we generate a new UV map using Blender’s Smart Project feature, and filter out objects for which this process fails to produce a desirable UV layout," Meta said in the TextureGen paper. "We use Blender to bake the combined, position, and normal passes mentioned above to the UV space."

So it looks like 3DGen is not as independent as it might seem. Edwards also noticed that Meta uses 2 objects from the Stanford 3D Scanning Repository as well as "a set of 54 objects with CC license that do not have a ‘No-AI’ tag from the Sketchfab website" to evaluate its methods, so if you don't want to contribute to AI experiments, you should check your tags.

Meta concludes that its method brings texture generation significantly closer to an applicable tool for 3D artists that can create diverse textures for assets in gaming, animation, and VR/MR.
