Rumor: Immortals Fenyx Rising Was Canceled for Assassin's Creed Codename Red

Ubisoft has high hopes for its hit franchise.

It's no secret that Ubisoft is very focused on its Assassin's Creed series; after all, it announced four new games in the franchise last year, with Mirage coming soon – on October 12.

However, the company seems to have very high expectations for its famous series as it reportedly canceled the Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel in favor of Assassin's Creed Codename Red – an open-world RPG set in feudal Japan.

Several days ago, Ubisoft confirmed it had shut down the development of the next Immortals Fenyx Rising, a mythological adventure where you save the Greek gods, saying it was "reallocating some creative teams and resources within the Quebec studio." Now, Axios's Stephen Totilo says that despite the Immortals 2 development going well, Ubisoft wants more people working on Red and possibly Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe.

Ubisoft's decision to move some Immortals Fenyx Rising developers to an AC title was not met well it seems. VGC's Andy Robinson claims that "many Immortals leads are pushing back" on being transferred, which is not that surprising.

To be honest, I'm not sure how Ubisoft's obsession with AC is supposed to play out successfully. To me, publishing many titles in the same universe in a relatively short period of time seems repetitive and a bit too much. Yes, there will be a year-long gap between them, which is better than the four-six years we usually wait for a new AAA game, but I doubt players will react as positively as the company probably expects.

Well, maybe all these new AC games will be shorter than what we're used to seeing from the studio. For example, Mirage is apparently only 20-30 hours long, and maybe this is Ubisoft's plan – creating smaller but more frequent experiences.
