Andrew Price, a.k.a. Blender Guru, showcased a digital recreation of the iconic scene and shared a tutorial explaining how it was set up.
Andrew Price, also known as Blender Guru, also known as The Donut Guy, has recently showcased a new jaw-dropping project, proving yet again that the title of "Guru" was given to him for a reason.
This time, the creator tackled one of the most iconic scenes in the history of cinema, recreating the memorable blood elevator sequence from Stanley Kubrick's 1980 The Shining. According to Andrew, the movie's practical effect took three months to remake in a digital space, utilizing Blender, materials from Poliigon, an online library of textures, models, and HDRIs for photorealistic 3D rendering, and the amazing FLIP Fluids add-on for creating and rendering liquid simulation effects in Blender.
"I learned that sims are hard and that Blender is really not up for the task," jokingly commented the artist. "I couldn't get the blood to stain the walls because the Dynamic Paint feature of Blender crashed every time."
Given that it's Blender Guru we're talking about, the reveal was also accompanied by a comprehensive tutorial that not only explains the production process behind the project but also answers a question that likely bothers many people – why practical effects in the film industry were replaced by CGI.
