Autodesk Acquires Wonder Studio Creator

Wonder Dynamics believes this will "push the boundaries of ethical AI and emerging technology."

Autodesk has acquired Wonder Dynamics, the creator of Wonder Studio, an AI tool that can automatically animate, light, and compose a 3D character model into a live-action scene. This should "give more creators the ability to add 3D animated characters to their projects and stories while minimizing the learning curve and automating typically complex and time-consuming processes."

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Wonder Dynamics is sure the deal will amplify its vision of AI helping artists rather than replacing them and "further push the boundaries of ethical AI and emerging technology in media and entertainment."

"Bringing Wonder Dynamics into the Autodesk Media & Entertainment portfolio extends our history of empowering artists with innovative and accessible solutions that break down barriers to entry," said Diana Colella, Executive Vice President of Media & Entertainment at Autodesk. "In the 1990s, we helped artists learn how to use computers to create 3D graphics leading to the industry we see today, and Wonder Dynamics is our next step on that journey. By embracing emerging technology, we want to help teams and creators of all sizes and skill levels create more content, more easily, so everyone has the power to bring their inspiring stories to life."

Wonder Dynamics' main project, Wonder Studio, was announced last year. "No more mocap, no complicated 3D software, and no expensive production hardware – all the artist needs is a camera."

The app lets you introduce a character to a scene, automatically detecting cuts and tracking the actor throughout the sequence. It processes footage, tracks motion, generates masks, and replaces the actor with the character of your making, matching the gestures and expressions and adjusting the lighting.

The studio's tool joins Maya, 3ds Max, and other software under Autodesk.
