Redditor Technocrat used real MRI scans.
Want to know what your brain looks like piece by piece? An artist known as Technocrat on Reddit doesn't have to wonder: they assembled their own brain in slices in a Blender animation using their real MRI scans.
It looks fascinatingly smooth and mesmerizing, and it's not as hard as it might seem: Technocrat said it was "surprisingly easy to do" because the ultimate idea was to put images on squares. There's a centimeter gap between each slice, so don't expect it to be too accurate, but the final image is really cool, reminds me of that one episode in Hannibal.
If you want to recreate the project, Technocrat outlined the steps:
- Have a part of your body scanned with MRI or CT
- Find your MRI slices, and make sure they're in a format that Blender can use (e.g. PNG). Make sure they're numbered in the right order
- Create planes, as many as there are slices. Space them out so that they're the same distance apart.
- Create a material to go with each slice. "In mine, I used the image's colour as its alpha in the principled BSDF, so that the dark areas are transparent and the white areas opaque. Also, make sure that the material's Blend Mode isn't "Opaque", otherwise, you won't be able to see through it."
- Apply each material to the slice that matches it. Adjust the spacing between each plane until your brain looks like the right shape
