Vegetation Study: Crafting Stylized Foliage From Scratch

Cyprien Witkowski shared a breakdown of his latest project.

Cyprien Witkowski

Environment Artist Cyprien Witkowski explored different workflows for creating foliage from scratch, experimenting with styles ranging from realism to stylized designs. The result, showcasing beautiful, fantasy-looking plants, wasn't focused on creating the most optimized atlas for video game production but on mastering the process of foliage creation using SpeedTree.

To achieve this stylized vibrant look, Cyprien combined procedural texturing techniques with hand-painted effects. Check out more renders below:

Cyprien also put together a brief breakdown of his process, covering everything from gathering references and understanding the plant's full life cycle to texture blockouts, sculpting in ZBrush, setting up, and the final texturing in Substance 3D Painter.
