KIRI Engine Creates Meshes from 3D Gaussian Splatting

Finally, you can use 3DGS scans in popular DCC software.

The KIRI Engine team keeps perfecting its 3D scanning app, and now 3D Gaussian Splatting, or 3DGS, can turn splats into meshes usable in popular DCC software, like Unreal Engine, Blender, or ZBrush.

3D Gaussian Splatting is a rendering technique that leverages 3D Gaussians to represent the scene, thus allowing one to synthesize 3D scenes out of 2D footage. Simply put, it takes samples of images and turns them into 3D scenes without creating meshes by converting a point cloud to Gaussians using machine learning. You can learn more about it here.

While the 3D Gaussian Splatting technology makes creating 3D objects so much easier, its unique PLY format can't be opened by most other apps. Thankfully, now you can save your project as a common OBJ file and work on it in any program that supports it.

"The KIRI Engine is the first application to introduce this feature, enhancing the versatility and maneuverability of 3D Gaussian splats. Like 3DGS itself, the technology to convert it into a mesh is very new, and currently, there is no open-source code that allows you to perform this interdisciplinary 3D generation."

The tech was developed in collaboration with Chongjie Ye and his team, and the mesh-generating algorithm will be open-sourced in a few months.

Meanwhile, you can test the feature in KIRI Engine by creating a new 3DGS scan and selecting the Include Mesh option on the uploading page following the video capture. Then, you'll get two files: the 3DGS one and the OBJ mesh.

In January, KIRI Engine also introduced the ability to edit splats on your smartphone.
