KIRI Engine Brings 3D Gaussian Splatting to Phones

Android users can finally try the feature to the fullest.

KIRI Innovations has updated KIRI Engine, adding 3D Gaussian Splatting to the 3D scanning app. Finally, Android users can try the feature on their phones.

3D Gaussian Splatting is a rendering technique that leverages 3D Gaussians to represent the scene, thus allowing one to synthesize 3D scenes out of 2D footage. Simply put, it takes samples of images and turns them into 3D scenes without creating meshes by converting a point cloud to gaussians using machine learning. You can learn more about it here.

"Similar to photogrammetry, 3D Gaussian Splatting produces dense point cloud data from a set of photos. However, with the integration of machine learning, these point clouds aren’t merely point clouds, but rather blurry gaussians that can be visualized based on given viewpoints. Machine learning helps to determine the correct colors to represent the areas around each point, and thus converting them into gaussians with mosaic colors," KIRI Innovations described the process in a press release.

The technique is getting more popular every day, but before KIRI Engine's new release, only iOS devices had the privilege to experience it, according to the company, and this version of the scanning application will bring realistic 3D scenes to Android as well.

As CG Channel points out, 3D Gaussian Splatting is a new tech that still faces some limitations. You can't download a 3DGS scan directly from KIRI Engine, and even if you could, there aren't many DCC apps that support 3D Gaussian Splatting. Unreal Engine has a commercial plug-in for working with the technology, and Unity has a free add-on, but that's about it for now.

If you're interested in 3D Gaussian Splatting, Bad Decisions Studio turned scenes from famous movies into 3D scenes not so long ago. Soon after, a team of researchers presented 4D Gaussian Splatting, a new method for achieving real-time dynamic scene rendering with high training and storage efficiency

KIRI Engine 3.0 is a free app, but the new tech is available in Pro subscriptions only, which cost $14.99/month or $59.99/year.
