Stunning 3D Asian Temple Inspired by Ghost of Tsushima & Chinese Philosophy

Check out Ziyi Yang's first personal project after entering the game industry.

3D Environment Artist Ziyi Yang has recently showcased a new outstanding 3D scene, marking their first personal project made after joining the game development industry. Check out Golden Temple, a highly detailed Asian-style house of worship environment set up as a Rookies Awards 2024 submission and inspired by Ghost of Tsushima and ancient Chinese philosophy.

To model the temple's pieces, create appealing textures, and set up the proper lighting scenario, Ziyi employed a variety of 3D software, including Maya, ZBrush, World Creator, Substance 3D Painter/Designer, SpeedTree, Marmoset Toolbag, DaVinci Resolve, and Unreal Engine 5.

"It is inspired by the ancient Chinese philosophy of 一叶知秋 (yi ye zhi qiu), which means "a single leaf indicates the coming of autumn" and embodies the idea of perceiving the whole from a small part," commented the artist. "I believe that the core elements of color and structure are all that is needed to convey a sense of emotion and meaning, as I focused on simplicity and details for each essence to create an immersive and moving environment."

Besides unveiling the scene itself, the creator has also shared a detailed breakdown offering an insider's look at the production workflows behind Golden Temple. You can read the full write-up here and check out more renders over on Ziyi's ArtStation page.

Previously, the artist also joined 80 Level to tell us about the workflow behind the Paradise project, share the core modeling technique used in it, and discuss the importance of planning ahead. You can read Ziyi's interview by clicking this link.
