Apple Is Reportedly Working on a Cheaper Version of Its AR/VR Headset

It is also rumored that the company's plans to launch lightweight AR glasses are postponed indefinitely.

Apple's long-rumored mixed reality headset should be coming later this year and, according to multiple rumors it is set to be priced at around $3,000. However, the latest reports suggest that the company will also reveal a more affordable version of the device that will be closer to the price of the Quest Pro.

According to reports from Bloomberg and The Information, Apple has already started working on a cheaper version of its AR/VR headset, which is yet to be announced.

Engineers at Apple are said to be exploring ways to achieve a lower price by using cheaper components and lower-resolution displays. It is also claimed that they are considering the use of fewer cameras and slower processors, which would eliminate the need for internal fans.

Other cost-saving measures may include asking users to manually adjust their field of view and not equipping the device with Apple's custom H2 wireless chip. The cheaper mixed reality headset is reportedly in its early stages of development, and Apple has not yet created a working prototype.

According to The Information, work on the budget version of the mixed-reality headset began last year, with the aim of releasing the device in 2024. Meanwhile, Bloomberg reports that the launch date for this more affordable headset could be either 2024 or 2025.

With the focus now on a more affordable AR/VR headset, Apple has reportedly put its plans to launch lightweight augmented reality glasses on hold, and it is now unclear whether the AR glasses will ever launch.
