Bulkhead Announces a "Formal End" of Its Relationship with Square Enix

Battalion 1944 is no longer coming to console, while the PC version of the game gets a free Legacy edition.

Bulkhead Interactive, the developer behind Battalion 1944, announced it has dropped Square Enix Collective as a publisher, meaning that the World War II shooter is no longer coming to consoles.

Bulkhead announced the news on Battalion 1944 Steam page saying that its relationship with the publisher has come to a formal end and expressing the regret that Battalion 1944 "never made it to console."

Battalion 1944 was crowdfunded on Kickstarter in February 2016 and was released for PC via Steam in 2019. The developers also announced it will launch PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later on, however, the console versions of the game were never released.

"We are deeply disappointed that Battalion 1944 never made it to console and we will be refunding all console Kickstarter backers," Bulkhead wrote. "Thank you to everyone that backed the console version and we’re sorry it has taken so long to rectify this."

The developer also shared that game will now be named Battalion: Legacy, representing the "revisited and final version of Battalion 1944" and will be available on Steam for free.

Battalion 1944 was published by Square Enix Collective which acquired a 20% stake in Bulkhead in 2018. The studio had also previously partnered with the publisher for the release of its 2016's title The Turing Test. Both games are now marked on Steam as self-published.
