A new analysis suggests that if players want to fully max out a character in the game, they'll have to spend over $100,000 or play more than 10 years.
Diablo Immortal, the new free-to-play video game in the Diablo series, might cost players around $110,000 or take 10 years of playing in order to fully upgrade their characters. The figures are suggested by the calculation shown in the recent video by the Bellular News YouTube channel.
The hosts of the show explained that currently if players want to max out their character, they need to use Legendary Gems, the premium currency in the game which is not available for free-to-play users. However, the players who are ready to spend real money to get Legendary Gems also can't buy them outright. Instead, the gems are randomly awarded if a player purchase Legendary Crests which are, essentially, loot boxes.
To support the players and deliver a better gaming experience, Blizzard introduced the "pity" system which guarantees that after purchasing 50 Legendary Crests, players will get one 5-star Legendary Gem. What's curious about this system is that by paying $100 players can only purchase 45 loot boxes, so they have to buy slightly more to get a guaranteed 5-star gem.
In other words, players either need to be incredibly lucky to get those gems or spend a large amount of money to purchase as many loot boxes as possible to eventually receive Legendary Gems to fully upgrade a character.
Diablo Immortal was released on June 2, 2022, for mobile and PC. The game uses a free-to-play monetization model based on in-game purchases including the loot box system which reportedly was the reason why the game didn't launch in the Netherlands and Belgium as the countries' legislation prohibits the use of loot boxes in games.
