An Artist Makes an Unusual Real-Time Hairstyle For Unreal Engine 5

The hairstyle combines braids and ponytails in an intriguing way.

3D Character and Hair Artist Maksot Sadykov, a.k.a. Lambrador, has showcased Ponytail Braids, a unique-looking real-time digital hairstyle that combines regular braids and ponytails into one intriguing coiffure.

Created to explore real-time hair further, the project was set up using Maya, XGen, the GS CurveTools plug-in, and Marmoset Toolbag, designed specifically for Unreal Engine 5 characters. Maksot noted that the most significant effort was invested in refining the braids, which serve as the focal point of the entire hairstyle.

"Initially, I considered using a single mesh for the braids, but I found the final result unsatisfactory," commented the artist. "Consequently, I decided to enhance them by adding an additional layer of haircards, resulting in a reasonable level of detail."
